In both instances, the Lady Panthers split at singles and were able to count on the underclassmen to win in doubles.
The meet against Waterloo came down to DeSherlia/Jungk beating Kennedy/Kennedy 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles, and Elliott/Stotler defeating Beherns/Hudson 6-1, 6-4.
“I knew the MVC was going to be tough this year. A lot of the teams are in the same position that we are, in a state of transition,” Head coach Beth Morgan said. “Both Waterloo and Civic Memorial came down to the No. 3 doubles match, and that is a lot of pressure for two sophomores that don’t have any varsity experience. So far, they are holding up well.”
Morgan said that she knows the beginning part of the MVC schedule is easier than the second half, since the Lady Panthers have not seen conference favorites Highland or Triad.
“Those two teams are never easy to get through,” Morgan said. “After beating Civic Memorial, and knowing that CM almost split with Triad, I feel like our chances are improving. We need our upperclassmen to win at singles and doubles, and hope the underclassmen can fight through their matches.”
